Visiting the website of Chinese-based online retailer Teavivre for the first time, I was struck by their low prices. Being based in China, they probably save on costs. But I was curious to sample one of their teas, to see whether it seemed to be of a high quality.

Long Jing (also known as Dragon Well) is one of the most famous types of Chinese green tea, known for its flat, straight leaves and vegetal flavor. I’m not a connoisseur of Long Jings, but I have tried a few, and have always enjoyed them.

Following Teavivre’s directions, I brewed two teaspoons of tea in 80 degree (Celsius) water for two minutes. As they brewed, the leaves emitted a fresh, vegetal scent with a lightly toasted quality. The first cup presented a fruity, slightly nutty aroma, with notes of vanilla and marzipan.

There was a hint of acidity in the first sip, giving way to a smoother flavor in the mouth. The overall flavor was light and delicate, with a hint of vanilla, and a sweet, fruity aftertaste. I happen to love green teas with sweet and fruity notes, so I definitely enjoyed this one. It’s an excellent afternoon green tea with a delicate, subtle flavor, but with enough complexity to make it appealing to drink often. For the price ($12.90 USD for 100 g), it’s a very good Long Jing.
