Pre rain Huang Shan Mao Feng, my first experience with the British tea company known as Driftwood Tea, is a wonderful example of a Chinese green tea. The dry leaves are long and loosely folded and have a somewhat intense fresh grassy aroma. I infused my leaves in 175-degree water for two minutes. The leaves unfolded to reveal large size. The prepared tea was a pale yellowish-green. The flavor of this tea is sweet and mellow, yet simultaneously sophisticated. While the aroma of the tea was rather strong and decidedly green in nature, the green flavor of the tea is much more subdued. The tea is light and springy in a way that just suggests that this is a very fresh tea (side note: Driftwood Tea's slogan is "Taste fresher tea", and this tea certainly appears to be at the peak of freshness). This tea lacks bitterness and intense vegetal flavors, which are two characteristics that often turn people off from green tea. Instead, this is smooth and very pleasant on the palate. The primary flavor that came across was a mild and sweet vegetal component, but I also tasted a bit of nuttiness and just a hint of a floral note. This is a green tea that I could drink over and over again, and therefore I do not hesitate in recommending it to others.
