Vanessa’s Teaview Snapshot
|"Luscious, sweet, coconutty, tropical...yum!"|
I received a sample of Calypso with a recent purchase of two coconut-themed teas from American Tea Room. This tea is a blend of Chinese black tea, coconut, and pineapple. The aroma that comes from my sample pouch just exudes freshness. The coconut is the big player here, but one cannot ignore the sweet pineapple flavor either. The tea leaves are a rich dark cocoa color and are short and tightly wired. Shredded coconut mingles freely and abundantly in the mix. It also appears that there are some occasional flower petals mixed in as well. I prepared the tea following the ATR recommendations, which calls for steeping the leaves for four to five minutes in 185-F water. The brewed tea bears an aroma that can only be described as luscious. It contains sweet, coconutty, and tropical elements...yum! The flavor holds true to the aroma. The coconut flavor is rich and natural, and while not too intense, is strong enough to be tasted above the black tea leaves. The pineapple brings a sweet, almost candy-like nature to the tea. However there is no overly-sugary mouth-feel or lingering sweetness that could become off-putting. I initially sampled this as a hot tea and I found it rich and comforting. Later, I tried it as an iced tea and it was refreshing and light. So this tea is truly versatile and can be enjoyed at different temperatures, times of day, and seasons. I didn't find any need to add milk or sugar to this tea, but I think that this tea would hold up to one or both. This is a wonderful blend that incorporates natural tropical flavors into a refreshing blend. Anyone who loves coconut or pineapple is sure to love this blend.
