When recently asked to review a variety of new offerings from Red Leaf Tea's matcha lineup, I added their Red Matcha to my list of requests without hesitation. Simply put, I was intrigued by this tea, and was really curious about how it might taste. Red Leaf Tea's website lists the ingredients as: "Pure Matcha powder from rooibos leaves,Red Powder". I am not sure exactly what the 'red powder' is or why it is necessary. The tea looks just like what you would expect to get if you ground up red rooibos into a powder form.
I proceeded to prepare my sample by vigorously whisking about one teaspoon of the powder in near-boiling water. I wasn't as precise about tea volume and water temperature as I usually am with matcha tea because experience has shown me that rooibos is a rather forgiving tea that doesn't require perfectly specific preparation parameters. Using my chasen, I was able to whip up a respectable froth. With some anticipation, I lifted the bowl to my lips and took my first sip. In a rather anti-climatic moment, I observed that it pretty much tasted exactly like regular rooibos. For me, regular leaf green tea and matcha made from powdered green tea leaves have vastly different flavor profiles. So I guess I was expecting that the red matcha would taste different from standard red tea. In that respect, I was disappointed. This tea does offer a decent rooibos flavor with the characteristic sweet and nutty flavors present, but it doesn't deviate at all from the flavor of traditional whole-leaf rooibos, making me wonder what the point of preparing this tea as a powder is. It was its novelty and uniqueness that attracted me to this tea, but since in the end it tasted just like standard rooibos tea, I can't say that this struck me as a "must-have" tea.
