Yame Gyokuro Nami is my first exposure to Hakoniwado, which specializes in Japanese tea. At the time of writing this review, the Hakoniwado website does not have any Gyokuro teas listed, so I was unable to get any additional information on this particular product. However, having sampled a good number of Gyokuro teas over the years, I am pretty confident that I know what to expect from this type of tea. The dry leaves are a brilliant, dark green color with little specks of light green throughout. The instructions provided to me indicate that, like most green teas, sub-boiling water is hihgly recommended. Also, the brewing instructions suggest that this tea will hold up for six re-infusions. The aroma of the dry leaves is intensely vegetal. I prepared the tea by infusing a little less than one teaspoon per cup and infusing the leaves for two minutes in hot (but not boiling) water. The tea is a vibrant yellowish-green color, and the liquid is mostly opaque. The flavor of this tea is rich and very much green: grassy, spinachy, and artichoke notes are all at play here. The tea verges on the edge of bitter, but in the end manages to avoid any unpleasant bitterness (although I would warn that improper preparation by using too-hot water would probably result in bitter-tasting tea). This is a smooth yet robust green tea, and surprisingly refreshing when taken iced. I did have the chance to re-infuse the leaves a second time and was pleased that the tea maintained a decent flavor and did not become weak or watery. Overall, this is a really good representative of gyokuro, and one that I would recommend to others.

Just a piece of additional information, Nami is lowest grade that was available, made from Yabukita tea varietal. Gyokuro will return again once 2012 year version will be available.
