BOH Plantations is the largest tea plantation in Malaysia as well as the country’s largest black tea manufacturer, with a factory located near its main tea garden.

I was curious to try a Malaysian black tea, something new to me that would likely fall within my favorite categories of black teas.

The dry leaves are of medium grade and size, tightly rolled. Aroma is sweet and woodsy, with strong overtones of raisins and figs.

I brewed the tea using boiling water for three minutes, using one tsp. tea to 8 oz. water. The result was as expected, a bold and strong brew, suitable for a morning tea. The grassy taste of the tea was a surprise, but set the theme well for my morning of gardening, and this hearty tea certainly provided a stimulant to fuel my efforts. The tea provided a slight woodsy flavor, bold, well rounded taste, with mild astringency.

Although it fits well within the category of strong breakfast-type teas, there was nothing particularly exciting about this tea. The brewed tea did not live up to the promise of the dried leaves. Biggest problem with this tea for me was a harsh aftertaste, which unfortunately followed me to the garden. I always drink my tea black, and am thinking this may be a tea that really needs cream and sweetener.
