Bao Zhong, or pouchong, is a personal favourite, though because it's not as easy to find as some other leaves, it sometimes gets forgotten. It's nice to have the opportunity to try it from Driftwood Tea because the company is new to me, so starting with a tea I have some experience with should give me a good gauge on their overall quality. That's the idea, anyway.

This 2011 Spring harvest was plucked in Taipei County, Taiwan. I steep a tablespoonish (the harder to measure, the better the tea, right?) in 5 ounces 175° water for 45 seconds. It's slightly sweet and seriously buttery with a surprising vegetal flavour you don't often find in pouchongs. Steep two, at 30 seconds, has picked up a mild floral scent but remains largely vegetal with a creamy texture and flavour.

The flavour is richer than most pouchongs I've had, and even the leaves are darker than average, mostly brown with some deep green. But the flavour remains true to the spirit of Bao Zhongs, since overall it's light and settles gently. It's a good meal tea or a leaf for Springtime. Most surprising, perhaps, is that I didn't even realise this is organic until after I'd finished it, which is always a good sign. I know of a few people who drink only organic teas, and sometimes I feel like they're missing out. Amazing organic teas aren't easy to come by, but here's a respectable one.

I'm intrigued, Driftwood Teas. If you want a pouchong, this is a good choice. If you want an organic tea, this is an excellent choice. This is a solid leaf, and I would absolutely try more from this company.
