I'd heard a few things about Chan Teas before they mailed samples in to Teaviews, and they were all positive, so I was super excited to see them in the latest inventory list. I requested this sample, got it in the mail, then was horrified to get Chan's newsletter saying they're going out of business. You just start to get to know a company, and all of a sudden, it's gone.

I preheat a yixing teapot, fill it's 1/3 with leaf, then steep at 195° for 20 seconds. I get a bright pale yellow liquor with a woody, apricot scent. The flavour is creamy and smooth with a mild apricot aftertaste. My 15-second second steep is creamy and simple without a lot of body or depth, but it is tasty.

I get a total of 9 steeps, all of which are smooth without bitterness or astringency. Despite the lack of downsides, while this is a good leaf, it's not great. It lacks personality or anything to help it stand out. I suspect this is an older sample, and that may have dulled the high notes of the tea. Because Chan Teas was closing their metaphorical doors, they probably weren't getting new stock for awhile, so this may not be particularly fresh. Even so, it is tasty despite being somewhat understated, and it makes me want to try more from this company. But I guess I'd better let that dream go and move on to another.
