javatealiberatorJava Tea Co. has a very specific scope, focusing on teas that are meant to replace whatever coffee drink you're addicted to. This one is caffeine-free, making it an especially ambitious replacement for you morning mocha. The heaping teaspoon per cup brews up into a shockingly deep, dark liquor.

It's rich and robust with chocolate galore and even a pretty realistic coffee flavour, thanks to the barley and chicory root. And since that coffee flavour is thanks to herbs, it's (almost, since there's a wee bit of green tea in there) entirely caffeine-free. It even has a lingering mocha aftertaste.

I expected this to be a very sweet blend, my usual complaint with chocolate teas as a lover of dark, bitter chocolate flavours, but I'm happy to taste that it's not overly saccharine. The barley adds a surprising underlying bitterness that I find balances the chocolate sweetness nicely. That bitterness combined with the richness means that this would take milk brilliantly. And, if you have a way to steam or froth that milk, I bet this would make an amazing latte. As a lover of lattes whose stomach hates coffee, I'm salivating just thinking about it.

This blend sets out to be a (mostly) caffeine-free replacement for coffee, which is a claim I've seen before and usually been disappointed by, but I'd say this fits the bill splendidly. If you want all the flavour without any of the jitters (or if you're like me, searing heartburn), then this is perfect.
