cantonwildmountainblackCanton Tea Co has never disappointed when it comes to flavor and quality. I have loved every tea of theirs that I’ve had the pleasure of trying. Today I enjoyed their Wild Mountain Black tea. On Canton’s website, they explain how this is an extremely rare black tea. It is a purple bud varietal tea that grows wild in the mountains of the Yunnan Province. I was curious as to how these tea leaves look before turned into tea. After research I found pictures of large trees with glossy, maroon leaves. I opened up the bag of this Wild Mountain tea and looked inside. The twisted, black leaves looked like they would produce a rich tea. They still had a maroon color to them. They smelled sweet and musty. Some say these leaves smell like truffles and I concur!
I steeped a little over 1 teaspoon in 1 cup of water. The water turned light brown and smelled sweet. It also had the aroma of bitter dark chocolate. After steeping for 4 minutes, I took a sip and was once again blown away by Canton. This tea is so smooth and rich. I felt as though the liquid was turning into velvet as it entered my mouth. It is buttery as it runs down your throat. Though I made this tea with only water, the liquid felt as though it was combined with heavy whipping cream. It tastes like a combination of tart chocolate and a hint of caramel. This tea isn’t as bitter as other black teas, though also not as sweet. It is amazingly fresh. I feel as though black teas can so easily create a stale aftertaste which I extremely dislike. You’ll taste none of that in this tea.
After some research, I found that this tea contains antioxidants. Since it is black tea, it also contains caffeine and will give you an energy boost. I think this is probably one of my favorite black teas, as it is so superior. I absolutely can’t wait to try it with some milk and honey. I also read that the more you steep this tea, the sweeter and softer it gets! Canton suggests re-steeping the tea leaves 3 to 4 times. You definitely don’t want to waste any of this superb tea.
