traillodgepeachmelbaThis is my first sample from Trail Lodge Tea. It looks liked they mostly specialise in flavoured blends, and they also have some interesting Fair Trade and charity programs.

The picture of this blend on the website shows big, beautiful chunks of fruit, but the actual leaf is mostly just rooibos and honeybush with a few tiny, unrecognisable add-ins. It's not very pretty, but the size of the leaves doesn't matter nearly as much with an herbal as it would with a proper tea.

After that initial minor disappointment, things go drastically uphill. I brew 1.5 teaspoons with boiling water for 5 minutes and get a cup that smells bright and sweet with a distinct, realistic peachiness.

I often don't like honeybush blends because I find it can both have a weird aftertaste and also be cloyingly sweet. However, the sweetness in this is perfectly balanced. The peach is crisp and realistic, balancing well with the rooibos. The sweetness of the honeybush isn't overpowering, and it lingers long into the aftertaste.

It's a simple, well done blend. It's delicious served hot, but it would make a brilliant iced tea. Honeybush and rooibos lovers would enjoy it, but it's tasty for us fence-sitters as well. The perfect summer blend.
